A Creative Rhythm for Living Artfully

begin here

The Art of D.A.N.C.E. is a creative rhythm I began shaping over a decade ago. It emerged from my desire to stay connected to my creative life without burning out or seeking external approval.

This journey became a way for me to listen to my inner voice. Not the inner critic, which so often acts as a saboteur, but the voice of inspiration. The one that beckons us to pay attention and inspires us to create.

Through this framework, I discovered a way to create consistently, free from the pressure of questioning whether my work was “good.” It became a path forward, a way to create without conditions, even when inspiration felt distant or dull.

In this practice, you’re invited to:

✔ Discover ways to ground yourself before creating, allowing you to quiet the external noise and nurture a deeper connection with your own creative process.

✔ Cultivate a steady rhythm that honors the cyclical nature of creativity, mirroring the ebb and flow of life and helping you align with the changing seasons of your work and personal journey.

✔ Foster a creative life that feels joyful and sustainable. One that resonates with your authentic self, creating greater congruence and harmony in all that you do.

What this is not:

❌ This is not about chasing fame or trying to go viral.

❌ This is not about performing for validation or approval.

❌ This is not about letting algorithms, trends, or outside opinions determine the value of what you create.

❌ This is not about waiting for someone else to tell you your work is good enough before you begin.

We’re here to create work that matters.

THE D.A.N.C.E. FRAMEWORK

D – Daily Journaling & Mindfulness

Begin by turning inward

Writing with curiosity and awareness helps you notice what is alive before the day’s frenetic dance begin

Invitation

Spend a few minutes writing freely or sitting quietly with your breath. Notice what thoughts, feelings, or ideas are asking for attention.

A – Attention & Intention

Creativity begins with noticing.

When you pay attention to your life, threads of inspiration have somewhere to land.

Invitation:

Take a moment to observe your inner world and your surroundings. What feels alive today? What small intention might guide your creative energy?

N –Nourish Yourself and Nurture What Sustains You

Creativity needs support.

Energy, relationships, rest, and meaningful connection all help creative work take root.

Invitation:

Reach for something that nourishes you today—a meaningful conversation, time outside, live music, a nourishing meal, or simply a quiet moment of care for yourself.

C – Commit to Daily Movement

Creativity is not only mental. It lives in the body.

Movement shifts energy, clears thinking, and keeps us connected to our physical experience of life.

Invitation:

Move your body in a way that feels natural—a walk, stretching, dancing in your kitchen, or stepping outside for fresh air.

E – Engage in a Nightly Ritual

Creative living includes reflection.

Closing the day with intention allows insights to settle and the mind to soften.

Invitation:

Before bed, take a few quiet minutes to reflect on the day. Notice what stayed with you, what surprised you, and what you might carry forward.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

THE DAILY RHYTHM → BEGIN AS AN EXPLORER

These practices can take 5–15 minutes each. Feel compelled to explore longer, go for it! As always, the invitation is to move through them lightly.

This is about progress, not perfection.

D – Daily Journaling & Mindfulness

Write a few lines in your journal or sit quietly with your breath. Let the day begin with awareness rather than urgency.

A – Attention & Intention

Notice something that sparks curiosity — a thought, a conversation, a line in a book, a passing idea. Let it inform how you show up creatively.

N – Nourish Yourself and Nurture What Sustains You

Reach out to someone, get out in nature, take yourself out on a date, or do something that replenishes your energy and fills up your cup.

C – Commit to Daily Movement

Move your body in a small, natural way. Even a short walk can open space for clarity and creative insight.

E – Engage in a Nightly Ritual

Prepare a cup of tea. Close the day with reflection. What did you notice today? What felt meaningful? What might tomorrow ask of you?

GO DEEPER → TAKE THE PATH OF AN ADVENTURER (OPTIONAL)

When you have more energy or time and you’re feeling adventurous:

Collaborate with another writer or creator

Start a mini newsletter swap, guest post, or co-write an idea to see your creativity through another lens.

Revisit an unfinished post or draft

Dig into something you started but didn’t finish. What sparks curiosity now? Give it a new angle.

Experiment with a new format or medium

Try turning an essay into a list, a visual story, or a short serialized thread—see what resonates with your audience and yourself.

Write a longer reflection or essay

Take one idea that’s been percolating and stretch it out. Explore it fully, play with voice, and let it the threads of inspiration take you on a creative adventure.

Spark meaningful conversation

Ask your fellow creatives a thoughtful question, respond with care to a comment, or share a reflection that invites dialogue about creativity, curiosity, or life. Focus on connection, curiosity, and genuine exchange—not just likes or reactions.

FOR THE COMMITTED CREATIVE → EXPRESS AS THE CREATOR YOU ARE

With time, notice how your creative expression naturally compels you to:

Share your work publicly

Publish an essay, story, or reflection on Substack, your blog, or social media. Let your voice reach the audience who’s waiting to hear it.

Develop a creative project or series

Turn a theme, idea, or experiment into a multi-part newsletter, a serialized story, or a cohesive creative project.

Host conversations or gatherings

Invite readers, peers, or fellow creators into discussions—live threads, Q&A sessions, or small virtual salons—to explore ideas together.

Teach or mentor from lived experience

Share your insights, lessons, or creative practices with others—through posts, guides, or informal mentorship.

Create something that contributes to your community

Use your work to spark connection, inspire others, or contribute to a cause or conversation you care about.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Use a journal, a simple calendar, or a Notion page.

Mark the days you show up.

Notice patterns.

Pay attention to what changes.

Respect the process.

ThE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND LIVING ARTFULLY: D.A.N.C.E.

Creative living or what I call Living Artfully is not about producing constantly.

It is about staying in relationship with your life.

  • Attention creates possibility

  • Creativity grows through care

  • Movement shifts perspective

  • Connection deepens courage

  • Reflection turns experience into wisdom

KEY LESSONS I’VE LEARNED

Through practicing D.A.N.C.E and sharing my work on Substack, here’s what I’ve discovered about creativity, presence, and community:

  • Consistency matters more than perfection. Showing up, even in small ways, is what sustains creativity and builds trust with yourself, your audience, your community.

  • Patience is part of the practice. Growth—of your work, your voice, and your community—takes time. Learning to be patient with the process is where the magic happens.

  • Engage with life, not just your tools. Journaling, noticing, moving, reflecting—these daily rhythms feed your creative output and deepen your connection to yourself and others.

  • Connection amplifies creativity. Meaningful dialogue with readers and fellow creators sparks new ideas and helps your work grow in ways you couldn’t plan.

  • Capture and nurture your insights. Thoughts, comments, and reflections are seeds—return to them, explore them, and let them evolve into stories, essays, or creative experiments.

  • Giving is receiving. When you share generously and authentically, whether advice, insights, or support, it strengthens both your community and your own creative confidence.

  • Systems support freedom. Using simple structures—like the D.A.N.C.E framework, a Substack tracker, or a Notion notebook—frees your mind to focus on the joy of creating rather than chasing outcomes.

A GENTLE REMINDER

Miss a day? That’s okay. Begin again.

Creative practice is a dance. Some days feel steady. Some days feel wildly alive. Some days feel uncertain.

The goal is simple: just show up.

Roll up your sleeves. Take a breath.

Trust the process. Trust yourself.

Your consistency and curiosity are far more powerful than chasing outcomes.

A SMALL ASK

I’m so excited to share that my book, Flecks of Gold is on its way!

If you feel called to support my work and help this community grow, here are a few ways:

Your support isn’t just about the book—it’s about nurturing the conversation around creativity, connection, and showing up for the work that matters to you.

RESOURCES

Organizing Your Creativity

Keeping your ideas, drafts, and reflections organized is key to creative living.

  • Notion (notion.so)

My go-to tool for organizing thoughts, drafts, and project timelines. It’s perfect for keeping track of ideas that come up during your daily rhythm or creative experiments.

  • Notebook / LM (notebooklm)

There’s nothing quite like pen on paper to capture fleeting ideas. Keep a notebook or a “living manual” (LM) handy to jot inspirations, reflections, or prompts from your D.A.N.C.E practice. These notes often turn into your next essay, newsletter post, or creative experiment.

Substack Strategy & Engagement | Creator Resources

Julia Cameron’s work—especially The Artist’s Way—was instrumental in helping me cultivate a deeper relationship with my creative process.

It gently shifted my perspective from needing to “be inspired” to simply showing up, again and again, with curiosity and care.

Her practices reminded me that creativity isn’t something we chase—it’s something we nurture through presence, trust, and small, consistent acts of devotion.

Jess offers a refreshing, honest take on creativity, business, and building a life that actually feels like your own.

Her work invites you to think differently, trust your instincts, and embrace a more intuitive, less rule-bound approach to creating and working.

It’s equal parts inspiration and permission slip—for anyone ready to do things their own way.

A big thank-you to my friend , Jim Kroft. Jim is an artist, musician, and storyteller creating work across music, film, writing, and more.

He created the **1-Hour Substack Note System.** This simple tracker will help you transform how you approach audience engagement.
