Exploring the Creative Process: The Interplay of Creativity and Artistic Expression
Recently, a friend and I were exploring the idea of creativity and what it means to be an artist versus a creative. While I do think there can be a difference, the words are often used interchangeably. For instance, you can be a creative without ever producing "art." You can be creative in business, problem-solving, cooking, relationships, and daily life.
To me, creativity is more of a mindset or energy — a way of moving through the world with imagination and openness. Being an artist, on the other hand, feels like a more defined identity, tied to the intentional creation of something: music, writing, painting, dance, etc. Calling oneself an artist suggests a relationship to a particular medium or practice, often with a sense of purpose and direction.
While creatives can also have a deep connection to their craft, the term 'artist' may carry a heavier sense of commitment and expectation, usually tied to an audience — even if that audience is just yourself. This may be why some creatives shy away from calling themselves artists, fearing the pressure or judgment that comes with it, and ultimately get stuck in the creative process, avoiding making art altogether.
The Safety in Calling Yourself a 'Creative
Perhaps there’s something about the capital "A" Artist identity that feels riskier to claim. Maybe calling oneself a "creative" feels safer, more playful. After all, no one is asking to see your portfolio when you say, "I’m creative." But when you say, "I’m an artist," it can feel like an invitation for people to judge your work or ask you questions.
The Power of Creativity
What I love about creativity — and why I’m so buoyed by exploring the process with others — is that it gives us a broader way of being, thinking, and imagining that isn’t always tied to making "art."
A Call to Explore Without Labels
My point here isn’t to get caught up in definitions or labels. It’s to say: Give yourself permission to explore creativity and see where it takes you.
The gift of creativity — what I call living artfully — is, in many ways, a way of thinking, seeing, and interacting with the world. It’s expansive. It doesn’t have to be tied to producing "art." That said, the creative process may very well lead to art-making.
Don't Let Labels Hold You Back
Too often, I find that highly creative individuals hold back from fully embracing their creativity and making art because they’re afraid of the bigger commitment or public declaration that comes with the label 'artist.'
The Act of Creating Is the Art
But what if getting out of your head — and into the creative process itself — was the act of making art?
What if, by exploring creativity without needing to arrive at a polished outcome, you found yourself creating art along the way?
